Rhythmic Gymnastics give it their all

16 Jul

The Rhythmic Gymnastics Finals took place yesterday in a venue packed with spectators.  Team BC gave it their all with great focus, obvious determination and the poise and grace that you would expect from such fine rhythmic gymnastics athletes.

Every division had a Special Olympics athlete compete.

And every competitor was a joy to watch.

There were plenty of smiles…

and plenty of graceful movement too.

But most of all, there was team spirit.

—————————————————–Special Announcement————————————————————-
Team BC wants to give a special shout-out to Leanne and Danielle. They both had an amazing experience at the competitions, made their best effort and impressed their coaches and the audience with their abilities on the floor. Well done guys!

With heat like this in Ontario, the swimming pool is the place to be! Here are some photos from our day at the aquatics centre!

Track & Field is Feeling Hot Hot Hot!

15 Jul

Team BC Track & Field seek some shade from yesterday’s hot sun.

After a busy morning of qualifiers and even a medal  win (more on that later!)  soaring temperatures and a lack of a cooling breeze, forced yesterday’s Track & Field events to be postponed from the afternoon until  the evening.

Thankfully, as the day went on everything cooled down and we got the chance to rest-up and prepare for the evening of competition that lay ahead. One interesting race was a Team BC only event, with Matthew Williams and Andrew McIntyre being the only two competitors. Naturally, they both made it through!

Another deserving mention goes to Ray Lappalainen who, after receiving medical attention to his shoulder just hours earlier, went on to  qualify in SECOND PLACE inthe Men’s 100m. Not far behind was Andrew McIntyre who came third. Both athletes go through to the finals.

There was a fantastic performance in Shot Put from Louisa Johnny.

As well as  determination, courage and sportsmanship from the whole team.

Beautiful London, Ontario

14 Jul

For those of you who haven’t been fortunate to visit London, Ontario we are happy to report: it’s beautiful!

They even call this river the Thames, just like the one in London, UK.

We’re staying at the University of Western Ontario, the grounds are huge and feel very historic.

Probably because of buildings like this one…
… and ornate doorways like these.
For some inexplicable reason, London is known as ‘the forest city’…!

Meeting Gary Lunn

14 Jul

Last night, just before opening ceremonies, three Special Olympics Victoria athletes were invited to meet a very important person, Hon. Gary Lunn.

Originally from Victoria, Mr. Lunn was delighted to meet the three athletes, who compete in Track and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

This very nice policeman was also delighted to meet the three! Well done SOBC – Victoria!

Practice Makes Perfect

14 Jul

Today (Tuesday) was our official practice day and everyone from Team BC put in tons of effort to make sure that they are up to scratch for the tough competition ahead. We caught a few of the sports in action, with determined focus and bright smiles all round.

Pure Focus

Skill
And determination.

Grace, under pressure.

Soaring to new heights.

Amazing us all.

Loving every minute.

Batter-up!

Making the base.

Practice in flight.
