A Note from a Coach

17 Jul

Sheila Snell (pictured on the left) is head coach for the Rhythmic Gymnastics team. She has this to say about their experience here at the National Games:

“The Rhythmic Gymnastics Team has experienced such a warm welcome from the City of London.  Our facility was awesome and decorated beautifully! As each of our athletes passed through the arch to perform they felt very special. The team was well prepared, so a huge thanks to their home coaches. With Dr. Laura’s help we were all prepared to do our personal best and WE DID IT!

We appreciate the volunteer support starting with our own designated assistants of Sarah and Elaine. All volunteers from Scott and Joelle though their entire team, ensured we wanted for nothing.

We reached a milestone at these games. Jane Perera (Level 4) and coach Dee Neukomm have now attended four national Games in the past 12 years. Jane has competed in all levels of rhythmic gymnastics starting with Level 1 in Sydney Nova Scotia, Level 2 in Prince Albert, Sask., Level 3 in Brandon, Manitoba and now Level 4 in London Ontario. Way to go Jane!”

Mandy Meets Her Idol

16 Jul

After Opening Ceremonies, when we all heard Dr Frank Hayden give a stirring speech about the importance of Special Olympics, Mandy knew one thing – she just had to meet him and say thanks.

Dr Hayden is one of the founders of Special Olympics, and this summer games takes place in the very University where he studied. Here in London, he wrote his thesis on inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities through sport, the same document that was used to establish the first Special Olympics Games in 1969.

Since then, we we all know how big Special Olympics has become, and how important it is to the people that we serve. If it wasn’t for Dr. Hayden it’s hard to believe that any of this would be possible today.

So on behalf of Special Olympics BC, we want to join Mandy in saying thanks to Dr. Frank Hayden.

Getting ready for POWERLIFTING!!

16 Jul

It’s been a long week for the Team BC Power Lifting athletes. they’ve been very patient as they wait for their day of competition, Saturday, to arrive. Weighing in today, spirits were lifted as they got a tour of the arena and a chance to talk with Dr. Laura, Team BC’s resident sport psychologist.

After chatting with Dr. Laura, it was time to weigh in…

And then have a walk through of what will happen tomorrow

Of course, the bars were left weightless, as no ‘real’ training takes place the day before a competition. Power lifters have to conserve their energy and not damage any muscles so they can be at their best.
